Amiens and the Somme Bay: a charming city and coastal combo a short hop from the UK
Food, history and seaside… Combining the untouristy, unique city of Amiens and the epic scenery of the Somme Bay makes for a magical mini road-trip around one of the loveliest parts of northern France.
Amiens is less than 1 hour 45 minutes from Calais and Saint-Valery-sur-Somme under 90 minutes. And it’s just an hour between the two on easy, uncrowded roads that make the journey part of the fun and make this trip easy to plan and stress-free. Sensational regional produce in both makes this a foodie paradise. Some of it is grown in Amiens’ own Hortillonnages – floating market gardens cultivated since the Middle Ages, and a real surprise in the heart of the city. And as well as amazing food (and other) shopping, Amiens has one of France’s most impressive cathedrals (not least when it’s lit up in its original medieval colours) and some fascinating museums. Meanwhile, the joy of a change of scenery, savouring local gastronomy and overall relaxation continues in the Somme Bay – a true world apart, the perfect place to simply breathe, walk or cycle, and feast on the freshest of seafood.
