Cassel is the quintessential Flemish village if ever there was one. Nestled amongst the Monts des Flandres foothills, it’s perfect for nature walks; learning about the history of Flemish painting at the Musée de Flandre; enjoying traditional cuisine of beer, carbonnade stew and Potjevleesch in an authentic estaminet restaurant; and listening to the musical mix of the local accent’s Germanic sounds. Or you could partake in one of the many traditional festivals, called kermesses, where you’ll meet happy and hardened locals as well as the giant puppets that are on the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list. It should come as no surprise that this village, proudly decorated with the Flanders Lion, was voted France’s favourite village in 2018!
